The City of Stockton is a dynamic, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and fast-growing community; its current population of more than 260,000 is expected to grow by 50% by 2035. Established in the California Gold Rush of 1849, Stockton quickly became an important destination for steamboats full of miners. Stockton became an agricultural center after the Gold Rush panned out. Residents built elaborate networks of levees in the Delta, creating new islands of land for growing crops, and dredged rivers to improve access to Bay Area markets. Today, the Port of Stockton is the second largest inland port in the western United States.
